Travel Vaccinations for USA

Most UK travellers visiting the United States do not require travel-specific vaccinations beyond the routine UK immunisation schedule. There are no health-related entry requirements. However, it is important to ensure routine boosters are up to date, particularly MMR due to recent measles outbreaks. Travellers undertaking hiking, camping or wildlife exposure may benefit from a brief pre-travel health review.

We recommend booking your travel health consultation four to six weeks before departure.

Traveller advice

MMR Check

Measles outbreaks have been reported in several US states, including Texas and New Mexico in 2024 and 2025.

Travellers should ensure they have:

  • Two documented doses of MMR vaccine

If vaccination status is uncertain, speak to your GP before travel.

Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is present in wooded and grassy areas, particularly in the north-east, mid-Atlantic and upper Midwest regions.

Preventative advice includes:

  • Use insect repellent
  • Wear long clothing in forested areas
  • Check for ticks daily after outdoor activity

Rabies and Bat Contact

Rabies is present in US wildlife, including bats, raccoons and skunks.

Any bat contact, even without a visible bite, requires urgent medical assessment due to the risk of unnoticed exposure.

If exposed:

  • Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and clean water for 15 minutes
  • Apply antiseptic if available
  • Attend hospital or A&E immediately

Rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) is hospital-only treatment and is not available in UK community pharmacies.

Other Health Risks

West Nile virus circulates seasonally in some states, particularly during warmer months. Standard insect bite avoidance is recommended in affected regions.

Food and water hygiene precautions should be followed as normal.

When to Book

For most US travel itineraries, a short pre-travel consultation four to six weeks before departure is sufficient.
