Understanding Eczema & Dermatitis
Eczema and dermatitis are common inflammatory skin conditions that can cause dryness, irritation and discomfort. Atopic eczema is one of the most common forms and is often linked with asthma or hay fever, while contact dermatitis develops following exposure to irritants or allergens.
At Longeva Wellness, consultations focus on understanding symptoms, triggers and the most appropriate treatment approach for long-term skin management.
Recognising Symptoms
Eczema and dermatitis can present with dry, itchy or inflamed skin, along with redness, flaking and irritation. During more severe flare-ups, the skin may become cracked, sore, weeping or crusted.
Symptoms often vary over time, with periods of improvement followed by flare-ups triggered by environmental or lifestyle factors.
Patients travel to our clinic from Rochdale, Manchester and across Greater Manchester for personalised skin consultations delivered under clinical supervision.
Treatment and Skin Care
Regular use of emollients is an important part of managing eczema and dermatitis, helping to protect the skin barrier and reduce moisture loss. During active flare-ups, treatments such as topical corticosteroids or other prescription options may be recommended following clinical assessment.
Treatment plans are tailored to the individual based on skin condition, severity and previous treatments tried.
Identifying Triggers
Common triggers can include soaps, detergents, fragrances, synthetic fabrics, pollen, pet dander, stress and temperature changes. Identifying personal triggers can help reduce flare-ups and support longer-term symptom control.
Our approach focuses on evidence-based treatment alongside practical skin care advice and ongoing management support.
When to Seek Professional Advice
If symptoms are severe, becoming infected or not improving with over-the-counter treatments, professional assessment is recommended. A pharmacist-led consultation can help assess the condition, provide treatment advice and arrange onward referral where appropriate.
As a GPhC-registered pharmacy with pharmacist-led clinical governance, patient safety and professional care remain central to every consultation.
Our clinic offers free on-site parking, refreshments during your visit and convenient access from across Greater Manchester.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between eczema and dermatitis?
The terms are often used interchangeably. Eczema typically refers to atopic eczema, while dermatitis covers a broader range of skin inflammation types.
Should emollients be used even when the skin seems clear?
Yes. Regular emollient use helps maintain the skin barrier and can reduce the frequency of flares.
Can children grow out of eczema?
Many children do improve with age, though some continue to experience symptoms into adulthood.
Is eczema contagious?
No. Eczema is not contagious and cannot be passed between people.
