What is HPV?

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common group of viruses. Some types can cause genital warts and some are associated with cancers, including cervical, anal, penile and some head and neck cancers.

How HPV vaccination helps

HPV vaccination protects against important HPV types and is most effective before exposure to HPV, but vaccination may still be appropriate for some people later. It does not treat an existing HPV infection, so individual assessment and realistic expectations are important.

Who may consider HPV vaccination?

The NHS provides HPV vaccination to eligible groups through the national programme. Private vaccination may be considered by some people outside that pathway, subject to age, previous vaccination, health and individual clinical suitability.

What happens at your appointment?

Your pharmacist will review relevant medical history, medicines, allergies, previous HPV vaccination and current health. If vaccination is suitable, the pharmacist will explain the course that applies to you and provide aftercare advice.

How many HPV vaccine doses are needed?

The number and timing of doses can depend on age, immune status and previous vaccination. Your pharmacist will confirm the appropriate schedule following assessment.

Side effects and aftercare

Common side effects can include pain, redness or swelling where the injection is given, headache or feeling unwell. You will receive aftercare advice and information about when medical help may be needed.

Frequently asked questions

Does HPV vaccination treat an existing HPV infection?

No. HPV vaccination is preventive; it does not treat an existing HPV infection or HPV-related disease.

Can adults have HPV vaccination privately?

Private vaccination may be an option for some adults following assessment. Whether it is appropriate depends on individual circumstances.

What if I have already had one or more HPV vaccine doses?

Bring any vaccination records you have. Your pharmacist can review your previous doses and advise what, if anything, is required next.

Do I still need cervical screening after HPV vaccination?

Yes, if you are eligible for cervical screening you should continue to follow NHS screening invitations even if you have been vaccinated.
