Travel Vaccinations for Canada

Most UK travellers visiting Canada do not require travel-specific vaccinations beyond the routine UK immunisation schedule. There are no health-related entry requirements. However, travellers should ensure routine boosters are up to date, particularly MMR due to recent measles outbreaks. Wilderness, hiking and camping itineraries may require additional advice regarding rabies and tick-borne illness.

We recommend booking your travel health consultation four to six weeks before departure.

Traveller advice

MMR Check

Measles outbreaks have been reported in parts of Canada, including Quebec and Ontario in 2024 and 2025.

Travellers should ensure they have:

  • Two documented doses of MMR vaccine

If your vaccination status is uncertain, speak to your GP before travel.

Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is present in wooded and grassy regions across southern Canada, particularly in:

  • Southern Ontario
  • Quebec
  • Nova Scotia
  • New Brunswick
  • Parts of British Columbia

Preventative advice includes:

  • Use insect repellent
  • Wear long clothing during outdoor activity
  • Check for ticks daily after hiking or camping

Rabies and Bat Exposure

Rabies is present in Canadian wildlife, including bats, foxes and skunks.

Any bat contact, even without a visible bite, requires urgent medical assessment because bats can transmit rabies through bites too small to detect.

If exposed:

  • Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and clean water for 15 minutes
  • Apply antiseptic if available
  • Attend hospital or A&E immediately

Rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) is hospital-only treatment and is not available in UK community pharmacies.

Other Health Risks

Cold-related injury and sun exposure at altitude can both present risks during winter travel and ski holidays.

Travellers should:

  • Dress appropriately for extreme cold
  • Use high-factor sun protection in snowy and mountainous environments
  • Maintain hydration during outdoor activity

When to Book

For most Canada travel itineraries, a short pre-travel consultation four to six weeks before departure is sufficient.
