What Causes Cold Sores?
Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus, which remains dormant in the body after the initial infection. Triggers such as illness, stress, hormonal changes or sun exposure can reactivate the virus, leading to the development of cold sores around the lips and mouth.
At Longeva Wellness, pharmacist-led consultations focus on early treatment, symptom management and reducing the frequency of recurrent outbreaks where possible.
Recognising a Cold Sore
Cold sores often begin with tingling, itching or burning sensations before visible blisters appear. The blisters usually burst, crust over and heal within seven to ten days.
Patients travel to our clinic from Rochdale, Manchester and across Greater Manchester for personalised consultations and treatment advice delivered under clinical supervision.
Treatment Options
Starting antiviral treatment at the earliest tingling stage offers the best chance of reducing the severity and duration of an outbreak. Antiviral creams and treatments may be recommended following assessment, depending on symptoms and suitability.
Our approach focuses on prompt access to professional advice and evidence-based treatment recommendations.
Managing Recurrent Cold Sores
For patients who experience frequent outbreaks, identifying and managing triggers can help reduce recurrence. In some cases, recurrent or severe cold sores may require further discussion regarding prescription antiviral treatment options.
Consultations are tailored to the individual and include discussion around symptoms, triggers and previous outbreaks.
Preventing Spread
Cold sores are contagious from the early tingling stage until fully healed. Avoiding close skin contact, not sharing lip products or utensils and maintaining good hand hygiene can help reduce the risk of spreading the virus to others.
As a GPhC-registered pharmacy with pharmacist-led clinical governance, patient safety and professional care remain central to every consultation.
Our clinic offers free on-site parking, refreshments during your visit and convenient access from across Greater Manchester.
