Travel Vaccinations for Thailand

Thailand requires pre-travel health planning depending on your itinerary, trip duration and whether you are visiting rural or urban regions. Most travellers should consider hepatitis A, typhoid and a tetanus booster as a baseline, while rabies and Japanese encephalitis may be recommended for longer or rural travel.

We recommend booking your travel health consultation four to six weeks before departure.

Traveller advice

Food and Water Safety

Traveller’s diarrhoea is common in Thailand.

To reduce risk:

  • Eat thoroughly cooked food served hot
  • Avoid raw or undercooked seafood
  • Avoid salads washed in tap water
  • Avoid ice from unknown sources
  • Drink bottled, boiled or treated water

Check bottled water seals before drinking.

Mosquito and Insect Protection

Dengue fever circulates year-round in Thailand and increases during rainy seasons.

Travellers should:

  • Use insect repellent containing up to 50% DEET
  • Wear long, loose-fitting clothing
  • Cover exposed skin during dawn and dusk
  • Sleep under treated mosquito nets in rural areas

Japanese encephalitis is present in rural rice-growing regions, particularly in northern Thailand.

Vaccination may be recommended for:

  • Rural travel
  • Longer stays
  • Repeat travel
  • Monsoon or wet-season travel

Regional Considerations

Malaria risk varies across Thailand.

Higher-risk areas include:

  • Border regions near Myanmar
  • Southern provinces near the Malaysian border
  • Parts of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai provinces

Bangkok, Phuket and most major island destinations are considered very low risk where mosquito bite prevention alone is usually sufficient.

Antimalarial tablets are prescription-only medicines and are not prescribed on site. Where appropriate, we will refer you to an Independent Prescriber.

Animal Contact

Rabies is present in Thailand, including in dogs, cats and monkeys.

Travellers should avoid touching or feeding animals, particularly around temples and tourist areas.

If exposed:

  • Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and clean water for 15 minutes
  • Apply antiseptic if available
  • Attend hospital or A&E immediately

Medical assessment is required even if you have received pre-exposure rabies vaccination.

Rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) is hospital-only treatment and is not available in UK community pharmacies.

When to Book

We recommend booking your Thailand travel vaccination appointment four to six weeks before departure.

This allows time to complete multi-dose vaccine schedules where required, including rabies and Japanese encephalitis.
