What is pneumococcal vaccination?
Pneumococcal vaccines help protect against serious illness caused by pneumococcal bacteria, including pneumonia, meningitis and bloodstream infection. The vaccine and schedule that may be appropriate depend on factors including age, health, previous vaccination and individual risk.
Who may benefit?
Pneumococcal vaccination is offered routinely by the NHS to certain age and clinical-risk groups. Private vaccination may also be considered following an individual assessment. We will review your circumstances and explain the options relevant to you rather than applying a one-size-fits-all recommendation.
What happens at your appointment?
Your pharmacist will review relevant medical history, medicines, allergies, current health and previous vaccination history before confirming suitability. If vaccination is appropriate, it can be administered during the appointment subject to service availability.
Safety and aftercare
Side effects vary by vaccine. Common reactions can include discomfort, redness or swelling at the injection site, headache, tiredness or feeling generally unwell. You will receive appropriate aftercare advice and should seek urgent medical help for symptoms of a severe allergic reaction.
NHS or private vaccination?
Some people may be eligible for pneumococcal vaccination through the NHS. Our private service provides another route for people seeking an assessment outside the NHS pathway. Eligibility and suitability are not the same thing, and vaccination remains subject to clinical assessment.

Frequently asked questions
How many doses will I need?
The schedule depends on the vaccine used, your age, medical history and previous pneumococcal vaccination. Your pharmacist will advise after assessment.
Can everyone have pneumococcal vaccination?
No. Suitability is assessed individually, including allergies, current illness, previous reactions and relevant medical history.
Should I bring my vaccination record?
Yes, if you have it. Previous vaccination information can help the pharmacist determine what may be appropriate.
Can I book privately if I may be eligible through the NHS?
You can discuss this with us. We will explain the private service and, where relevant, make clear that NHS eligibility may also exist.
