What Does Altitude Sickness Cover?

Altitude sickness refers to the health risks that can occur when travelling to high-altitude destinations, where reduced oxygen levels can affect how the body adapts. Symptoms can range from mild headaches and nausea to more serious illness in higher-risk situations.

At Longeva Wellness, pharmacist-led consultations assess your destination, itinerary, medical history and previous travel experience to determine whether preventative treatment or prescription medication is appropriate for altitude-related illness.

Why Early Preparation Matters

Preventative treatment for altitude sickness is often most effective when started before ascent. Early consultation allows time to assess risk properly and where appropriate, issue prescription medication in advance of travel.

Patients travel to our clinic from Rochdale, Manchester and across Greater Manchester for travel health and altitude-related medical advice delivered under clinical supervision.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

Please bring your travel itinerary, including destinations, planned altitude exposure and dates. Any previous vaccination or medical history is also helpful in ensuring safe and accurate clinical advice.

Prescription Travel Medications

Where clinically appropriate, prescription medicines may be provided to help prevent or reduce the severity of altitude sickness. Suitability is always assessed during consultation, taking into account medical history and travel plans.

All prescribing is carried out following a full clinical assessment to ensure safety and appropriateness.

After Your Consultation

Following your appointment, you will receive a clear personalised plan outlining recommended preventative measures and any prescribed treatments. Written guidance can also be provided for reference during your trip.

As a GPhC-registered pharmacy with pharmacist-led clinical governance, patient safety and professional care remain central to every consultation.

Our clinic offers free on-site parking, refreshments during your visit and convenient access from across Greater Manchester.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I book?

Ideally at least four to six weeks before travel to allow time for all required vaccinations and medications to be arranged.

Do I need a consultation for every trip?

It depends on the destination. Trips to higher-risk regions benefit from a review even if you have travelled there before.

Are travel vaccinations available on the NHS?

Some are. Many are provided privately. Our team advises on what is available and at what cost.

Can I get malaria tablets from a pharmacy?

Some antimalarials are available without prescription. Others require one. A consultation identifies the most appropriate option.
