Travel vaccines

Travel Vaccinations for Austria

Austria is a low-risk European destination for most UK travellers, with no mandatory vaccines required for entry. However, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is endemic throughout the country, particularly affecting travellers spending time outdoors in forests, rural areas and alpine regions.

We recommend booking a travel health consultation four to six weeks before departure.

Traveller advice

Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE)

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) risk is present in forested and rural regions, particularly between spring and autumn when ticks are most active.

Vaccination may be recommended for:

  • Hiking and camping
  • Cycling and trail running
  • Forestry or outdoor work
  • Rural stays and countryside exposure

TBE vaccination is available at our pharmacist-led travel clinic following an individual travel risk assessment.

Accelerated vaccine schedules may also be suitable for some last-minute travellers depending on timing before departure.

Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is transmitted by the same ticks found throughout Austria.

There is currently no Lyme disease vaccine available for UK travellers.

To reduce risk:

  • Use insect repellent on exposed skin
  • Wear long trousers in grassy or wooded areas
  • Perform tick checks daily after outdoor activity
  • Remove ticks promptly using a tick removal tool

Altitude and Outdoor Risks

Altitude illness can affect travellers spending time above approximately 2,500 metres in the Austrian Alps.

Travellers should:

  • Ascend gradually where possible
  • Maintain hydration
  • Recognise symptoms such as headache, nausea and breathlessness

Standard Alpine sports risks, road traffic accidents and cold injury precautions should also be considered during skiing, hiking and mountaineering activities.

West Nile virus has also been reported occasionally in eastern lowland regions during summer months.

Rabies

Rabies risk in Austria is extremely low, although bat-associated lyssaviruses remain present.

Pre-exposure rabies vaccination may be considered for:

  • Bat handlers
  • Cavers
  • Veterinarians
  • Wildlife workers

If exposed:

  • Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and clean water for 15 minutes
  • Apply antiseptic if available
  • Attend hospital or A&E immediately

Rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) is hospital-only treatment and is not available in UK community pharmacies.

When to Book

We recommend booking your Austria travel health consultation four to six weeks before departure.

If TBE vaccination is required through a specialist clinic, arranging referral early is advised, although accelerated schedules may still be possible for late bookings.
