About Anaphylaxis
Anaphylaxis is a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that can develop rapidly, often within minutes of exposure to a trigger. Common causes include food allergies, insect stings and certain medications. Immediate treatment with adrenaline is essential and emergency medical help must always be sought after use.
At Longeva Wellness, pharmacist-led consultations focus on assessing suitability for emergency rescue treatment, providing clear guidance on use and supporting patients at risk of severe allergic reactions.
Understanding Adrenaline Rescue Treatment
Adrenaline is the first-line emergency treatment for anaphylaxis. Longeva supplies adrenaline rescue nasal spray as a needle-free alternative to traditional auto-injector pens for suitable patients.
The nasal spray is a single-dose device administered into one nostril at the first signs of anaphylaxis. It is suitable for adults and adolescents aged 12 and over weighing 30kg or more.
Patients travel to our clinic from Rochdale, Manchester and across Greater Manchester for personalised consultations delivered under clinical supervision.
Who This Treatment May Be Suitable For
This service may be appropriate for patients with a clinically confirmed history of anaphylaxis or those considered at high risk of severe allergic reactions. It may also suit patients replacing an expired rescue device or individuals who cannot use or prefer not to use an adrenaline auto-injector pen.
The nasal spray is not currently licensed for children under 12 years old or adults weighing under 30kg. For these groups, adrenaline auto-injector pens remain the standard treatment option.
How the Consultation Works
Consultations include review of allergy history, current medication, medical background and weight to confirm suitability. Where clinically appropriate, treatment may be supplied under a Patient Group Direction or against an existing prescription.
Our team provides full instruction on administration technique, emergency aftercare and what to do immediately following treatment use, including the importance of calling 999.
Patients leave with the device, patient information leaflet and written training guidance for future reference.
Emergency Advice and Ongoing Safety
Any rescue treatment device, including nasal spray or auto-injector, is intended as an emergency first response rather than a replacement for medical care. Emergency services (999) must always be contacted immediately after use.
Current UK guidance recommends carrying two in-date rescue devices at all times in case a second dose is required before emergency help arrives.
As a GPhC-registered pharmacy with pharmacist-led clinical governance, patient safety, appropriate prescribing and professional care remain central to every consultation.
Our clinic offers free on-site parking, refreshments during your visit and convenient access from across Greater Manchester.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the nasal spray as effective as the auto-injector pen?
Regulatory approval is based on bridging studies showing comparable adrenaline absorption and pharmacokinetics. Clinical outcome data is still being collected. The pharmacist will discuss the evidence with you and the option that fits your circumstances best.
Do I need a prescription?
Adrenaline is a prescription-only medicine. Supply at Longeva is through either a private prescription written by your usual prescriber or under a Patient Group Direction following our pharmacist consultation. We will confirm the supply route at booking.
Is there a charge for the consultation?
Consultation fees are shown above. The fee covers the pharmacist's assessment, the training in correct use, and any written advice. The cost of the medicine itself is in addition to the consultation fee.
Can I get the spray if I have a blocked nose or hay fever?
Yes. Studies submitted to the regulator show the spray remains effective with a blocked nose, since absorption is rapid and adrenaline does not depend on smell receptors. The pharmacist will go through any concerns at the consultation.
How quickly can I be seen?
Same-week appointments are typical. For replacement of an expired device we can often supply on the same day where stock is in clinic.
When to Seek Further Help
If you have used a rescue device, regardless of whether symptoms have settled, you must seek emergency medical assessment. If you are unsure whether you are at risk of anaphylaxis, your GP or an NHS allergy clinic is the right first point of contact. Longeva does not provide allergy diagnostic testing.
