Typhoid Vaccination

What is Typhoid?

Typhoid is a serious bacterial infection caused by Salmonella Typhi, spread through contaminated food and water. It is common in South Asia, particularly India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, as well as parts of Africa, Southeast Asia and Central America.

Untreated typhoid can be life-threatening. Symptoms include sustained high fever, headache, stomach pain and general malaise. Even with treatment, recovery can take weeks and the infection can cause serious complications.

Who needs the Typhoid vaccine?

Typhoid vaccination is recommended for:

• Travel to South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, Central America or the Middle East
• Anyone staying with local communities, eating local food or travelling off the main tourist routes
• Long-stay travellers regardless of accommodation standard
• Anyone who has not previously been vaccinated and is travelling to a risk area

Which version is right for me?

We offer two forms of typhoid vaccination:

Typhoid injection (Typherix or Vi polysaccharide): A single injection providing protection for approximately three years. Suitable for most travellers including those short on time.

Typhoid oral vaccine (Vivotif): Three capsules taken on alternate days. Provides protection for approximately three years and is a good option for those who prefer not to have an injection. Must be taken at least one week before travel.

We also offer a combined Hepatitis A and Typhoid injection, a single jab covering both, which is ideal for travel to South Asia or Sub-Saharan Africa where both vaccines are typically recommended.
