Antiviral Flu Treatment in Manchester
Antiviral medicines may be used in some circumstances to treat or prevent influenza. They are not a substitute for flu vaccination and are not suitable for everyone. Whether treatment is appropriate depends on symptoms, timing, risk factors, medical history and current clinical guidance.
When Can Antiviral Treatment Be Considered?
Antiviral treatment is most useful when started promptly after flu symptoms begin and is generally prioritised for people at higher risk of complications or where a clinician considers treatment appropriate. A clinical assessment is required before any prescription-only medicine can be supplied.
What Happens During the Consultation?
The clinician will ask about your symptoms, when they started, relevant medical conditions, medicines, allergies and whether you have been in contact with someone with influenza. This helps determine whether antiviral treatment, self-care or referral is the most appropriate option.
Prescription Medicines
Some antiviral medicines used for influenza are prescription-only medicines. A prescription is issued only where an authorised prescriber considers it clinically appropriate after assessment. A particular medicine cannot be guaranteed before consultation.
When to Seek Urgent Medical Help
Seek urgent medical advice if you have severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, signs of severe dehydration, rapidly worsening symptoms or another reason to think you may be seriously unwell. In an emergency, call 999.

Do antivirals cure flu?
Antivirals do not instantly cure influenza. When clinically appropriate and started at the right time, they may reduce the duration or severity of illness and may be used to reduce complications in some higher-risk patients.
How quickly do I need treatment?
Timing matters. Antiviral treatment is generally most effective when started early, so seek clinical advice promptly if you think you may need treatment.
Can I take antibiotics for flu?
Influenza is caused by a virus, so antibiotics do not treat uncomplicated flu. Antibiotics may be required only if a clinician diagnoses a bacterial complication.
Do I still need a flu vaccine?
Antiviral treatment and vaccination have different roles. Antivirals treat or prevent influenza in selected circumstances, while vaccination is used to reduce the risk of influenza and its complications.
