Your flight is approaching and you have just realised you have not checked your travel vaccinations. Do not assume it is too late. Although arranging travel-health advice early gives more time for vaccine schedules and planning, last-minute travellers can still benefit from an individual assessment.

How late is too late for travel vaccinations?
There is no single cut-off that applies to every vaccine or traveller. Some vaccinations involve multiple doses or need time for protection to develop, while other useful measures may still be possible closer to departure. Your destination, previous vaccination history and departure date all matter.
Bring your full itinerary
Tell the clinician every country and relevant transit point, not just your final destination. Advice may change according to regions visited, length of stay, accommodation, activities and onward travel.
Check your previous vaccinations
If you have vaccination records, bring them. This can help avoid unnecessary duplication and allows the clinician to understand which courses may already have been completed.
What about malaria if I leave soon?
If your itinerary includes a malaria-risk area, seek advice promptly. Malaria prevention is destination-specific and may include mosquito-bite avoidance and, for some travellers, prescription antimalarial medicine following clinical assessment.
Read our malaria prevention guide.
Yellow fever needs particular planning
Some journeys may involve yellow fever vaccination recommendations or certificate requirements. For a first yellow fever vaccination, certificate validity generally begins 10 days after vaccination, so timing can be particularly important.
Leaving tomorrow?
Even when vaccination options are limited by time, a travel-health discussion can still cover practical risk reduction, food and water safety, mosquito-bite avoidance, animal exposure and what to do if you become unwell.
