Vietnam Travel Vaccinations: What UK Travellers Need to Know

|Longeva Wellness

From Hanoi and Ha Long Bay to Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City and rural adventures, Vietnam can involve very different travel-health risks depending on your route. The right advice is therefore itinerary-specific rather than a universal checklist.

Which vaccinations might I need for Vietnam?

Check that routine UK vaccinations are up to date. Depending on your destination, duration, activities and individual risk, a clinician may discuss travel vaccinations such as hepatitis A, typhoid, hepatitis B, rabies or Japanese encephalitis.

Malaria in Vietnam

Malaria advice varies by location. Some itineraries may require bite-avoidance measures alone while antimalarial medicine may be considered for travel to certain risk areas. Your exact route matters.

Read our malaria prevention guide.

Mosquito-bite prevention

Preventing mosquito bites is important because mosquitoes can transmit infections including dengue. Use an appropriate repellent, cover exposed skin when practical and use suitable accommodation precautions.

Food, water and traveller’s diarrhoea

Hand hygiene and sensible food and water choices can reduce risk. Seek medical advice if diarrhoea is severe or persistent, contains blood or causes significant dehydration.

Rabies and animal bites

Avoid contact with dogs, monkeys and other mammals. If bitten, scratched or licked on broken skin, wash the area thoroughly and seek urgent medical advice. Pre-travel vaccination does not remove the need for post-exposure assessment.

Backpacking and multi-country trips

If Vietnam is one stop on a longer South-East Asia trip, bring your full itinerary to your appointment. Border crossings, rural stays and onward travel can change the advice you receive.

When should I arrange my travel-health appointment?

Book as early as practical because some vaccination schedules require time. Last-minute travellers should still seek advice promptly because useful protection and practical risk-reduction measures may remain available.
