Bali may be one of the UK’s favourite long-haul destinations, but travel-health planning should go beyond packing sunscreen. Advice for Bali and the wider Indonesian archipelago varies according to where you travel, how long you stay and what you plan to do.

Which travel vaccinations might be considered for Bali and Indonesia?
Make sure routine UK vaccinations are up to date. Depending on your route and individual risk, additional travel vaccinations may be discussed, including hepatitis A, typhoid, hepatitis B, rabies or Japanese encephalitis.
Your needs can be different for a resort stay in Bali, rural travel, island hopping, backpacking or a longer trip.
What about malaria?
Malaria risk varies across Indonesia and should be assessed against the exact islands and regions on your itinerary. Do not assume that advice for one part of Indonesia applies everywhere. Bite prevention may be important and antimalarial medicine may be recommended for some itineraries following clinical assessment.
Read our malaria prevention guide.
Mosquito-borne illness
Mosquito-bite prevention remains important because mosquitoes can transmit infections other than malaria, including dengue. Use an appropriate repellent and take practical steps to reduce bites day and night.
Rabies and animal contact
Dogs, monkeys and other mammals should not be approached or fed. Following a bite, scratch or lick to broken skin, wash the wound thoroughly and seek urgent medical advice. Pre-travel vaccination does not remove the need for medical assessment after an exposure.

Bali belly and traveller’s diarrhoea
Good hand hygiene and sensible food and water precautions can reduce your risk of gastrointestinal illness. Severe or persistent symptoms, blood in the stool or significant dehydration need medical attention.
When should I book?
Seek travel-health advice as early as practical, particularly when a multi-dose vaccine course may be relevant. Travelling soon? It is still worth asking for advice rather than assuming nothing can be done.
