Prescription weight-management treatment can be appropriate for some adults, but it is not suitable for everyone and should never be chosen on the basis of an online trend or a particular brand name. The right starting point is an individual clinical assessment.
At Longeva Wellness in Rochdale, our pharmacist-led weight-management service reviews your health, goals, medical history, current medicines and previous approaches before discussing options that may be appropriate.

Who may be considered for prescription weight-management treatment?
Clinical decisions are based on more than weight alone. A clinician may consider factors including body mass index (BMI), weight-related health conditions, previous weight-management approaches, medical history, medicines and the risks and benefits of treatment.
National guidance sets criteria for the use of different prescription weight-management medicines. These criteria are not identical for every medicine or NHS pathway, and private prescribing still requires an individual assessment.
BMI is useful, but it is not the whole assessment
BMI can help clinicians assess weight-related health risk, but it is considered alongside other information. NICE guidance also recognises that BMI should be interpreted carefully in some ethnic groups and alongside measures such as waist-to-height ratio where appropriate.
Why might treatment not be suitable?
Suitability can be affected by medical conditions, pregnancy or plans for pregnancy, current medicines, previous reactions and other clinical factors. The relevant considerations depend on the treatment being assessed.
Booking a consultation therefore does not guarantee that a prescription will be issued.
What does medical weight management involve?
Medication, where clinically appropriate, is only one part of weight management. Nutrition, activity, behaviour, sleep, health conditions and ongoing review can all matter. NICE recommends that medicines used for weight management are used alongside appropriate dietary and physical-activity support.
