BMI is often used when assessing eligibility for medical weight management, but it is not the only factor that matters. Your health history, medicines, weight-related conditions and individual risks can all influence whether a particular treatment pathway is appropriate.
At Longeva Wellness in Rochdale, eligibility is assessed individually. Booking a consultation does not guarantee a prescription or a particular treatment.

What is BMI?
Body mass index (BMI) is a calculation that uses height and weight to place an adult into a broad weight category. Healthcare professionals can use it as one part of assessing weight-related health risk and eligibility for some weight-management interventions.
BMI has limitations. It does not directly measure body fat or describe where fat is carried, and it should be interpreted alongside other clinical information.
Does BMI determine whether I can have medical weight-management treatment?
Not by itself. Different treatments and clinical pathways have specific eligibility criteria. Depending on the option being considered, assessment may include BMI, the presence of weight-related health conditions, previous weight-management approaches, current medicines, medical history and contraindications.
National guidance also recognises that BMI-related health risk can differ between ethnic groups, so clinicians should interpret measurements appropriately rather than treating one number as the entire assessment.
What health information may be considered?
Your clinician may need to review conditions associated with increased weight-related risk, your current medicines, allergies, previous treatments and other relevant medical information. The exact assessment depends on your circumstances and the treatment pathway being considered.
What if my BMI does not meet the criteria?
A request for prescription treatment does not mean it will be clinically appropriate. If you do not meet the relevant criteria, the clinician can explain why and discuss other appropriate approaches to weight management.
A safe service should not alter or ignore eligibility criteria simply because someone wants a particular medicine.
Can I calculate BMI myself before booking?
You can use a BMI calculator to get an indication, but an online result cannot confirm treatment eligibility. Measurements and relevant health information still need to be considered as part of an appropriate clinical assessment.
