University Vaccinations 2026: MenB, MenACWY & MMR Before Term Starts

Moving into university halls or residential college means new people, shared spaces and close contact. Before term starts, it is worth checking your vaccination record — particularly because there is a time-limited NHS MenB programme for eligible young people in 2026/27.

If you are in Rochdale or Greater Manchester and need help understanding your vaccination history or private vaccination options, Longeva Wellness vaccination clinic can provide pharmacist-led advice and assessment.

Why is MenB especially important in 2026?

Meningococcal group B bacteria can cause meningitis and sepsis. For 2026/27, the NHS is offering MenB vaccination to specific young people, including an eligible birth cohort and certain people starting university or residential further education for the first time in autumn 2026.

Because the programme has defined eligibility and deadlines, check the current NHS criteria rather than assuming you need to pay privately.

What about MenACWY?

Students should also check whether they have received MenACWY vaccination. It protects against four meningococcal groups and is part of the UK vaccination programme for eligible young people. If your history is incomplete or uncertain, check with your GP or vaccination provider.

For private assessment where appropriate, see our MenACWY vaccination service.

Have you had the recommended MMR doses?

Universities can experience outbreaks of measles and mumps. People starting university should check that their MMR vaccination is up to date. If you missed vaccination when younger, NHS catch-up may be available.

How do I check my vaccination history?

Start with your NHS App or GP record where available. If records are incomplete, your GP or vaccination professional can advise what to do next. Do not delay simply because you cannot remember which vaccines you had as a child.

When should students sort vaccinations?

Ideally, check your record before moving into student accommodation. Some vaccine courses require more than one dose and spacing between doses, so leaving everything until moving day can limit your options.
