MenACWY vs MenB: Meningitis Vaccines Explained

MenACWY and MenB are not interchangeable. They protect against different groups of meningococcal bacteria, which is why a person may be advised to consider one or both depending on age, vaccination history, risk and current recommendations.

What does MenACWY cover?

MenACWY vaccination protects against meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y. It forms part of UK vaccination programmes for specified groups and can also be relevant for particular travel requirements or recommendations.

What does MenB cover?

MenB vaccination protects against meningococcal group B. It is used in the routine childhood programme and may also be offered to other eligible groups under current NHS programmes.

Why do university students hear about both?

Young people entering university or residential education should check their vaccination history because meningococcal disease can spread in close-contact environments. Current eligibility for catch-up programmes can change.

Which meningitis vaccine do I need?

That depends on why you need vaccination, your age, previous doses, travel plans and individual circumstances. A clinician should assess this rather than choosing a vaccine based on its name alone.
