Pneumococcal Vaccination: Who May Benefit and Why?

Pneumococcal vaccination helps protect against serious illnesses caused by pneumococcal bacteria, including some forms of pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis. In the UK it is particularly relevant to older adults and people with certain health conditions that increase their risk of serious pneumococcal infection.

Who is offered pneumococcal vaccination on the NHS?

Current NHS guidance recommends pneumococcal vaccination for people aged 65 and over and for children and adults at higher risk of becoming seriously ill from pneumococcal infection. The exact vaccine and schedule depend on age, medical history and risk group.

Which health conditions can increase risk?

NHS guidance identifies a range of higher-risk groups, including people with certain spleen problems, chronic heart, lung, kidney or liver conditions, diabetes, weakened immune systems, cochlear implants and some other clinical risks. Occupational recommendations can also apply in specific circumstances.

Do all adults need a pneumococcal vaccine?

No. Vaccination recommendations are based on age and individual risk rather than being a universal annual vaccination for every adult. If you are unsure whether you are eligible or whether private vaccination is appropriate, a healthcare professional can review your circumstances.

NHS eligibility or private vaccination?

If you meet NHS eligibility criteria, pneumococcal vaccination may be available free through the NHS. Private vaccination may provide another route for suitable people outside a particular NHS programme, subject to clinical assessment and availability.

Is pneumococcal vaccination the same as a flu jab?

No. They protect against different infections. Some people may be eligible for both. Current NHS guidance allows pneumococcal vaccination to be given at the same time as certain other vaccines, including flu, where clinically appropriate.
