Perimenopause, Anxiety & Low Mood

Mood changes, anxiety and low mood can occur during perimenopause and menopause, and they can have a significant impact on daily life. Sleep disruption, physical symptoms and life circumstances can interact with hormonal changes, so support should consider the whole person.

Can menopause affect mood?

Yes. The NHS recognises mood swings, low mood and depression among possible menopause and perimenopause symptoms. Sleep problems and tiredness can make emotional symptoms feel more difficult.

Should every mood change be blamed on hormones?

No. Anxiety and depression have many possible causes. A new or severe mental health problem deserves proper assessment, particularly if it is persistent or affecting your ability to function.

What support can help?

Support depends on symptoms and circumstances. NICE includes menopause-specific cognitive behavioural therapy as an option for some menopause-associated symptoms, and HRT may be discussed where appropriate. Psychological support, lifestyle measures and other treatments may also be relevant.

When should you seek urgent help?

If you feel unable to keep yourself safe or are experiencing a mental health crisis, seek urgent professional help rather than waiting for a routine menopause appointment.
