MMR Vaccine for Adults: What If You Missed a Dose?
Not sure whether you had both MMR doses? You are not alone. Adults can have gaps in their vaccination history, particularly if records are incomplete or vaccination schedules changed during childhood.
MMR protects against measles, mumps and rubella. If you are unsure whether you are fully protected, the important step is to check your vaccination history and seek appropriate advice rather than assuming you are covered.

How many MMR doses are normally needed?
The routine UK programme uses 2 doses of MMR-containing vaccine for long-term protection against measles, mumps and rubella. The exact vaccine used in the NHS childhood programme has changed over time, so adults checking older records may see different MMR-containing vaccine names.
What if I missed one or both doses?
If you have not had 2 MMR-containing vaccine doses, or you are unsure, check your NHS vaccination record or speak to your GP practice. NHS catch-up vaccination may be available, and private vaccination may also be an option following an appropriate clinical assessment.
Read our wider guide to catch-up vaccinations for adults.
Why does MMR matter for adults?
Measles is highly infectious and can cause serious complications. Mumps can also cause complications, and rubella is particularly important because infection during pregnancy can seriously harm an unborn baby.
Do I need MMR for university or travel?
People entering university, travelling, working in healthcare or living in settings where infections spread readily may have additional reasons to check that their routine vaccinations are up to date. Requirements and recommendations depend on individual circumstances and destination.
Students can also read our university vaccination guide. Travellers can visit our Travel Health Clinic.
Can I have MMR if I am unsure about my history?
Your vaccination history and medical circumstances should be reviewed by an appropriate healthcare professional. MMR is a live vaccine and is not suitable for everyone, including during pregnancy and for some people with significant immune suppression. If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, seek appropriate clinical advice.
