What is Tick-Borne Encephalitis?

Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection of the brain and nervous system spread by the bite of infected ticks. It is found across a broad belt of Central and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and parts of Asia, including popular destinations such as Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, the Baltic states, Scandinavia, and Siberia.

TBE can cause severe neurological illness including meningitis and encephalitis. There is no specific treatment, prevention through vaccination and tick avoidance is essential for travellers with significant outdoor exposure.

Who needs the TBE vaccine?

TBE vaccination is recommended for:

  • Hikers, campers, cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts travelling in endemic regions of Europe or Russia
  • People working outdoors or in forested areas in endemic regions
  • Anyone spending extended time in rural or forested areas in Central and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia or Russia during spring, summer or early autumn
  • Those visiting friends or family in rural parts of endemic regions

About the vaccine

The primary course consists of three doses. The first two doses are given one to three months apart (a rapid schedule of 14 days is available for adults who need faster protection). The third dose is given 5 to 12 months after the second. Boosters are recommended every 3 to 5 years for ongoing risk.

A junior formulation is available for children aged 1 to 15.

What to expect

Each dose is an injection into the upper arm. Mild soreness and mild flu-like symptoms for 24 to 48 hours are possible. Most people tolerate the vaccine well.
