Emergency Contraception: What to Do After Unprotected Sex

If you need emergency contraception, seek advice as soon as possible. Emergency contraception can be relevant after unprotected sex or when regular contraception may have failed or been used incorrectly. The appropriate option depends on timing and individual circumstances.

Seek a confidential contraception consultation

Where can you get emergency contraception?

In England, emergency contraception is available through services including participating pharmacies, sexual health clinics and some GP services. The NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service includes free oral emergency contraception at participating community pharmacies.

Why does timing matter?

Emergency contraception is time-sensitive. Do not delay seeking advice while trying to decide which option is best yourself. A healthcare professional can assess when unprotected sex occurred, your menstrual and contraception history, relevant medicines and other factors.

Is the morning-after pill the only option?

No. Oral emergency contraception is one route. A copper intrauterine device can also be used for emergency contraception and requires assessment and fitting by an appropriate contraception or sexual health service. Your clinician can explain the options relevant to your circumstances.

What happens during a pharmacy consultation?

The consultation is confidential and assesses clinical appropriateness. You may be asked about timing, current contraception, medicines, health history and other information needed to select the safest appropriate pathway.

What about ongoing contraception?

An emergency contraception consultation is also an opportunity to discuss ongoing contraception. Participating pharmacies can provide initiation and ongoing supply of oral contraception through the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service where the relevant criteria are met.
