Contraceptive Pill from a Pharmacy: What Women Need to Know
In England, participating community pharmacies can provide oral contraception after a confidential clinical consultation, including starting the pill and providing ongoing supplies. This can make contraception easier to access without routinely needing a GP prescription first.

What can a pharmacy contraception consultation cover?
A trained pharmacy professional reviews relevant health information and contraception needs. Depending on the type of pill being considered, checks may include medical history, medicines, blood pressure, height and weight. The aim is to establish whether an option is clinically appropriate, not simply to supply a medicine on request.
Combined pill or progestogen-only pill?
These are different forms of oral contraception and they are not suitable for everyone in the same way. Your health history, medicines, preferences and relevant risk factors help determine the appropriate option or whether another service should assess you.
Can I start the pill at a pharmacy?
Yes. The NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service in England includes initiation of oral contraception as well as routine monitoring and ongoing supply at participating pharmacies. Individual pharmacy services and availability should still be checked.
When might you be referred?
If your history, symptoms, measurements or contraception needs fall outside the service pathway, you may be directed to your GP or a sexual health service. Long-acting reversible contraception such as an implant or intrauterine device requires a service able to provide the relevant procedure.
